BioMedical Technology Solutions Announces New Biomedical Waste Processing SystemAugust 16, 2006 BioMedical Technology Solutions, Inc. has announced the release of the Demolizer II, the only cost-effective system approved for on-site treatment and disposal of both sharps and red bag waste for low to medium volume medical waste generators. The Demolizer II is used by doctors’ offices, dentists’ offices, nursing homes, veterinary clinics and other health care facilities. It is a compact system, about the size of a desktop copier. Don Cox, Biomedical Technology Solutions CEO and President, said, "The Demolizer II offers a safer, simpler and less expensive solution for medical waste. It is a good example of how technology can improve our health care system and help protect the environment." The Demolizer II ensures safe, complete disposal of medical waste. The external surfaces of the system do not get hot and it emits no odor. After treatment, the sharps and red bag waste are sterile and all syringes are destroyed by melting. The treated waste is then properly labeled and simply thrown away as common trash. The conventional way to dispose of medical waste is to store it on-site, and then to have it picked up by a commercial third-party hauler. However, this can be expensive, time consuming and can carry risks to both health and safety. Last year there were 850,000 accidental sticks resulting in $3 billion in costs. The infectious germs from medical waste double every 20 minutes becoming hazardous to those working nearby. The conventional method can also create liability issues. Because of "cradle-to-grave" responsibility for medical waste, a generator such as a doctor’s office can be fined if the waste transport company violates regulations. In 2004, a large commercial infectious waste transporter was fined nearly $225,000 for violations. Shortly afterwards, fines were assessed to two hospitals, a physician, a funeral home and a nursing home which were customers of the transporter. The Demolizer II eliminates the need for the medical waste to be transported, while also eliminating the generator’s "cradle-to-grave" liability. Additionally, it eliminates the paperwork that staff members handle. Stringent federal and state laws require that treated medical waste be accurately labeled prior to final disposal. People responsible for medical waste must maintain detailed log books for up to three years. Each Demolizer II is shipped with a Seiko mini-printer that produces two labels documenting that the operator has met all regulatory requirements for disposal of their treated medical waste. You simply put one label on the collector and one in the log book and then drop the collector in the garbage as common trash. The Demolizer II is a reconfigured, improved version of the original Demolizer biomedical waste processing system which was developed 13 years ago. The original Demolizer successfully completed more than 250,000 processes. The Safety Compliance Officer at one nursing home said of it, "I love the system for two main reasons; safety first and cost. I have reduced my yearly medical waste cost by almost 80%." Michael Hindes, Director of Environmental Services for one of Genesis Health Care’s facilities, commented, "What you eliminate with this system is the cost of carting, waste fee permits, pick up costs, record retention fees, storage issues, and having the responsibility of the waste being properly disposed of by a licensed third party hauler." There are more than one million low to medium volume generators of medical waste in the United States, and millions more worldwide. The Demolizer II is approved for use in 46 states with additional approvals pending, and for use in the United Kingdom and India. The Demolizer had its first patent issued in November 1999 and has three new provisional patents pending as of May 2006. Biomedical Technology Solutions is working with global health leaders to develop a system specifically for use in developing countries, which have serious barriers to effective medical waste disposal. About Biomedical Technology Solutions:
Uniquely designed to efficiently and cost-effectively dispose of both sharps and red bag waste without hazardous emissions or special facility requirements, the Demolizer system provides the optimal solution for a wide variety of biomedical waste producers. With well over a million facilities in the United States alone, and many millions globally, Biomedical Technology Solutions is dedicated to refining this proven technology to address the specific requirements of its current and prospective customers. |
