Senate passes FDA user fees
The Senate voted 92-4 to approve a bill that would authorize the FDA to collect $6 billion in user fees from medical firms to fund the review of drugs and devices. The legislation would extend the program to makers of biosimilars and generic drugs. The FDA estimated that user fees from 2013 to 2017 would pay for approximately 60% of review costs. The legislation now goes to President Barack Obama's desk.
